Commissioning Seiko

Seiko enjoys the process of working on commissions for both private and public spaces. She strives to create a harmony between an existing environment and her work. Also, she has experience of working with children to create special commissioned works for school buildings.

‘I am based at Yorkshire Artspace Society, Sheffield, where I have numerous contacts with other British artists. This environment has made me realise how my aesthetic sense is heavily influenced by my land of origin.

In comparison to Western culture, simplicity is the keyword in my country. In my opinion, the aim of simple design is to create harmony between an environment and the things that exist within it. For example, the Japanese paper sliding door allows for daylight as well as moonlight to permeate the space, for the chirping of insects and whistling of the wind to enter the space and to feel somebody’s existence in adjacent rooms. The aim of these simple designs is to create harmony between environments without necessarily isolating them. In my work, I explore the relationship with surrounding space and strive to create new dimensions to the space. I hope it gives people a new experience of spatial art and happiness.’
